Sightseeing tours

On Wednesday afternoon (June 2nd,2010), the organizers have allocated time in the program for participants to visit Lausanne and the surrounding region. Below you will find the options for your afternoon. All tours leave directly after lunch from the conference venue.

Please book and pay for the trip at the same time as registration. Note that you can only book one tour.

1) The “Castle and Wine” Tour      [CHF 70]

ChillonA bus trip to “Château ChillonExternal link” including a guided tour of what is surely Switzerland's most famous castel. An architectural jewel located in the most beautiful setting imaginable, between the shores of Lake Geneva and the Alps, this monument with over 1,000 years of history, has inspired artists and writers, from Jean-Jacques Rousseau to Victor Hugo and Lord Byron, from Delacroix to Courbet.

LavauxOn the journey back to Lausanne, you will stop off at the Lavaux, the Swiss Riviera, and its wine terraces set high above Lake Geneva and dating back to Roman times. In 2007, the area was designated a UNESCO World Heritage. Here, you will visit a wine cellar, sample some fine wines from the region and enjoy the magnificent views of the lake and the Alps.

2) The “Cheese and Alien” Tour      [CHF 70]

GruyèresA bus trip to the pituresque medieval town of Gruyére – famous for its cheeseExternal link but also for the stunning (and somewhat disturbing) art of H.R. GigerExternal link. He is perhaps best known for his work on the film "Alien", for which he won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects in 1980. Housed in the St-Germain castle, the museum boast the largest collection of the artist's works, which include not only paintings and sculptures, but also furnishings and film sets.

GigerBetween reality and fiction, past and future, H.R. Giger takes you on a journey into the fascinating world of your imagination. The H.R. Giger bar, opposite the museum, is also well worth visiting. The H.R Giger museum is located a few metres away from Gruyères CastleExternal link. Constructed in the 13th century, a visit to the castle is a journey across eight centuries of architecture, history and culture.

3) The “Sweets and Sports” Tour      [CHF 50]

DurigAfter a short walk, Master Chocolatier Dan DurigExternal link will demonstrate the art of chocolate-making in his workshop, selecting a variety of chocolates from around the world for you to taste. The visit starts with a demonstration of the various techniques required to produce individual chocolates, followed by a tasting session where you will have the opportunity to sample a selection of chocolates made from different cocoa bean varieties and cocoa strengths. This tasting session demonstrates the incredible variety of possible chocolate flavors. At the end of the visit, you will have the chance to make your very own chocolate. Protective aprons will beprovided.

MuseeAfterwards you will visit probably the most famous Lausanne museum of all - the Olympic museumExternal link. The interactive exhibition shows that “The Olympics is much more than a mere sporting competition. It is a philosophy of life that is rooted in the depths of time. Sport, art and culture are the traditional pillars of the Olympics”. is the official message. This permanent museum, which is beautifully situated on the esplanade overlooking Lake Geneva, was opend in 1993.

4) The “Meeting the Alps” Tour      [CHF 80]

RochersYou will take the train from Lausanne to Montreux. From there, you will hop on the rack-railway which will climb over 1'600 metres to the top of the Rochers-de-NayeExternal link (2,042 metres above sea level). This is one of the most breathtaking vantage points in Western Switzerland, offering a stunning view over Lake Geneva and French Savoy, Vaud, Valais and the Bernese Alps.

In the event of persistent rain the trip may be cancelled. So, please let us know what your second choise would be so that we can try to book you on another tour in such an eventuality.
